Marion County officials and hundreds of local residents gathered Thursday, May 21st for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new state-of-the-art Marion County Animal Shelter. The $24 million facility, located on a 20-acre donated site at 6405 W. Highway 40, replaces an aging, undersized shelter and features expanded kennels, dedicated surgical suites, enrichment spaces for animals, and increased parking. The new shelter represents a major investment in animal welfare and community service, providing separate treatment areas for surgical, pre-op, and ICU care, plus dedicated spaces for training and playgroups. The project broke ground in October 2024 and was completed this spring, demonstrating Marion County's commitment to caring for its furry residents.

Nationally recognized horse rescue organization  Horse Plus Humane Society has officially opened its new Florida hub right here in Ocala, the Horse Capital of the World. The facility opened on May 10, 2026, and is already welcoming resident horses. Ocala Police Department's Cpl.

Alexandria Blackman, Officer Clayton Brown, and Officer Sean Price appeared on 'Fox & Friends Weekend' to discuss the department's use of  viral social media videos to humanize officers and increase recruitment efforts.

The officers shared how these videos have been successful in portraying a more approachable image of law enforcement, which in turn has helped to attract more potential applicants to the department.

Through their innovative use of social media , the Ocala Police Department has been able to connect with the community on a more personal level and highlight the positive aspects of police work.

The new  Sunstop gas station and convenience store is set to be constructed at the intersection of NE 25th Avenue and NE 35th Street in northeast Ocala.

The project, named Sunstop #360 Ocala, will be developed by Southwest Georgia Oil Company Inc on a 2.14-acre parcel of land purchased for $939,000 in August 2023.

The site will feature a modern convenience store, fuel canopy, and parking spaces.

Plans also include stormwater drainage retention.

The development is currently undergoing county review and the developer has submitted waiver requests for certain requirements.

Overall, the project aims to meet local commercial needs while considering future road infrastructure projects.

Marion County approves $60 million contract with IAFF Local 3169, raising firefighter/paramedic starting pay to $75,022 and implementing 24/72 work schedule by 2029.
