Moffitt Cancer Center has opened a First Connect office in southwest Ocala, giving Marion County residents a nearby place to seek guidance after a cancer diagnosis or a concerning test result.

At 11115 SW 93rd Court Road, Suite 600, providers offer initial assessments, review medical histories and help coordinate diagnostic testing.

They can also connect patients with Moffitt specialists, clinical trials and advanced treatment services.

The office serves people with suspected or newly diagnosed cancer, a recurrence, or questions about transferring care or getting a second opinion.

First Connect aims to see new patients within three days, though that timeframe is a goal, not a guarantee.

Not every treatment will be available in Ocala, so patients may still need to travel for specialized care.

For local families facing difficult news, the office offers a closer place to ask questions and plan their next steps.

Six seniors at Vanguard High School in Ocala have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, joining about 16,000 students selected from more than 1.2 million entrants nationwide.

The Marion County School Board recognized the International Baccalaureate students Sept. 22 alongside Superintendent Diane Gullett.

Nirav Borade hopes to pursue neurosurgery; Miles Burdette plans to study electrical engineering; and Gabrielle “Gabby” Javelona aims to become an endodontist.

Nektarios Lavdas plans to study computer science, Michael Ribay environmental engineering, and Ifeanyichukwu Samuel psychology as preparation for medicine.

Semifinalist status does not guarantee a scholarship.

To become finalists, the students must submit applications and essays, secure recommendations, and earn qualifying SAT or ACT scores.

About 6,700 scholarships worth nearly $24 million are expected to be awarded in spring 2027.

Ocala has no shortage of golf courses, but a night out with friends or family can call for something different from a traditional round.

A Topgolf-style venue in Ocala could offer driving games, digital scoring, food and drinks in a setting where beginners and regular golfers play together.

A PopStroke-style venue would offer another option: putting courses paired with outdoor dining and space to linger.

Either could give Marion County residents a casual outing without the drive to another Florida market, but neither would enter a town unfamiliar with golf.

Established courses, including Ocala Golf Club, Candler Hills Golf Club and Stone Creek Golf Club, already serve local players, alongside mini-golf options.

The question is whether enough residents would return regularly to support a larger attraction at a price families and groups find worthwhile.

Location, traffic, noise and nearby neighborhoods would matter, too, as Ocala weighs the appeal of more entertainment close to home.

In Ocala and Summerfield, horse farms are more than scenic pastures; they are part of Marion County’s identity.

As development pressures grow, neighbors worry that losing open land could permanently change the rural character they value.

Concerns about data centers, noise and utility bills remain speculation, not confirmed details of any particular proposal.

But residents deserve clear answers about potential traffic, water use and effects on nearby homes.

Local officials should explain what land-use changes would permit, how impacts would be assessed and when the public can weigh in.

Property owners also deserve a fair hearing as they decide what to do with their land.

This is not simply a choice between preservation and growth; it is a question of where development belongs.

For families who know these fields, the answer could shape what the next generation sees as home.

Horse Capital won't mean much if the farms keep disappearing.
